Keeping Memories Alive through Ofrendas

I have lived in Columbus for 30 many years! Living in Central Ohio and doing work in Columbus has exposed me to the lovely celebration of Día de los Muertos via the local community I provide as portion of Proyecto Mariposas and Martin de Porres Heart. While remembering the souls of those people have moved on has been significant in my family in Puerto Rico. The custom of Día de los Muertos was a attractive way to rejoice their lives and their recollections right here in United States.

The ofrenda enables us to share the beautiful tales left guiding encouraging us proceed our lives supporting each other. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic was having the life of a lot of in our speedy local community and family in our countries without the chance of mourning shut to every single other. Individuals who passed are alive in our memories. At the Martin de Porres, we wished to offer a area for our close local community to have an ofrenda a way to honor these are for good in our hearts.

Our two leaders: Citlali Perez and Jimena Torres (Mexico) took on the process to make our 1st ofrenda at the center. They coordinated the decoration, the literature to share with our neighborhood. That ofrenda was incredibly substantial for our neighborhood because it allowed us to appear with each other in a harmless area even though trying to keep social length. It allowed us to share help for the people that are section of our heart during the yr and have come to believe in the space as a room of peace. We knew we experienced to continue to keep this apply for our households. That 12 months, like several, I was confronted with mourning the lifetime of a pretty near member of our relatives.

The natural beauty of this celebration is the colours, the stories, the group that is built. Sugar skulls, marigolds, papel picado, monarch butterflies, images, pan de Muertos and catrinas make the fantastic setting for households to honor, reflect and share the existence of other folks.

This yr (2022), we are building our ofrenda for the local community and furnishing individual areas for everyone that would like to build their ofrenda. The Martin de Porres Centre is focused to be a secure haven for community, spirituality, instruction and the arts. The Día de los Muertos presents all of this by means of a celebration of existence and useless.

This day has come to be pretty vital to me personally and as a neighborhood member. Death is portion of the cycle of life and by this celebration, we can be related to the innovative and the reflective religious tradition.

In reflecting on the ofrendas, and those people who are close to us, how have their stories stayed with us and affected us now? How can we retain their memory alive by re-telling their tales?
